Imagine creating a masterpiece at just 20 years old. That's exactly what Pagnia Xiong did with her debut album, Nyob Ib Sab. Recorded in Saint Paul, Minnesota, this album introduced the world to her unique voice and vision. Almost 20 years later, songs like Nyob Ib Sab, Niam, and Plaub Sab Phab Ntsa remain beloved classics, a celebration of Pagnia's remarkable achievement.
Did you know? The inspiration for "Nyob Ib Sab" struck Pagnia at age 19. She penned the song in her college bedroom after watching the romantic film, The Notebook.
02 - Pagnia’s Sophomore Album
Ntseeg Kuv
Release Date: July 3, 2010
A new chapter unfolded in Pagnia's musical journey, leading her to record her sophomore album, Ntseeg Kuv, with Hmong American record label, Evolution Records Entertainment. With renewed passion, Pagnia shared her voice once more, exploring themes of love, heartbreak, and social issues. This album gifted fans with favorites like Txoj Phuam Txoom Suab, Cia Rau Txoj Hmoo, Zaj Npau Suav, and the emotional title track. Txoj Phuam Txoom Suab continues to resonate deeply, becoming a cherished coming-of-age anthem for Hmong brides, a display of the powerful connection between Pagnia’s music and her community.
Best Memory: Pagnia experienced the magic of music firsthand while recording Ntseeg Kuv in Greensboro, North Carolina, with Evolution Records Entertainment (Fong Lor, Kong Lor, and Shu Lor). Sharing Cia Rau Txoj Hmoo with the team at the kitchen table, a quick piano track was laid down along with a rough vocal demo in a single take, just for memory’s sake. That impromptu recording captured something special—so special that it became the official version.
03 - Pagnia’s Third Album
Plhis Suab
Release Date: July 2, 2016
Plhis Suab stands as a powerful and moving testament to Pagnia's artistic growth, marking her debut as an executive producer. Two years in the making, this album delves into the darker corners of love, family, community, and dreams, showcasing Pagnia's willingness to explore complex and challenging themes. Through songs like Hluav Taws, Ib Tiam, and Sam Thiaj, she invites listeners on a deeply personal journey, offering not only connection but also the strength to overcome obstacles and pursue their own aspirations.
Who Was Involved: Plhis Suab was a family affair. With Pagnia as executive producer, her brother, Tchoua Xiong, composed the album. Working together across North Carolina and Minnesota, they dedicated months of hard work, including countless late nights, to bring the album to fruition in July 2016.
